COWLEY ESTATE, MILLENNIUM GARDENS

Designed to provide opportunities for social interaction for residents and imaginative play facility for children on the Cowley Estate, Lambeth, London.

This underused area of the estate was re-imagined to be affordably maintained, give children and young people the freedom to play creatively and establish relationships. The intervention within the context of a small garden, proved a positive effect on promoting community cohesion. Adults are encouraged to establish their own networks and benefit from the planting of a herb garden through culinary experimentation.

Bespoke elements encourage young children to challenge themselves through play, testing their limits, invent games and playing shops. The planting provides an element of tranquillity and within an estate environment of predominantly hard surfaces, in a small way experience nature. A series of bird boxes encourages wildlife supported by a notice board providing information on their potential occupants.

Designed in collaboration with Åsa Stace of Nordic Nest.
